CANBERRA BUSHWALKING CLUB ACTIVITY PROGRAM

May 2005

The program for a month usually covers walks from the second Wednesday of the month to the second Wednesday of the following month. This program covers from the second Wednesday of May to the second Wednesday of June.

Saturday 14 May – Middle Creek – M/E-M 

Walk from the Yankee Hat car park across open country to where the creek enters a valley, then through open forest, attractive and largely unaffected by the fire with lunch by the creek. Sunday, 15 May – Molonglo Gorge – S/E 

Surprise yourself at the attractiveness of this nearby gorge. Walk along trails beside the gorge, returning by a similar route, perfect for a winter afternoon. Be at the track head (down Kowen Rd which comes off Sutton Road a short distance from the Piallago Rd/Yass Rd/Sutton Rd junction near Queanbeyan) at 2pm, back at the cars by 4.30. Sunday 15 May – Tinderries – L/M

Follow the Mt Allen fire trail to the top of the Tinderry Range. Short scrub bash to some of the rock slabs and possibly to the top of Tinderry Twin Peak. Whilst mainly on track there is a steep rise of approximately 700 metres. Maps: Tinderry and Michelago 1:25,000 Leader: Roger E. Transport ~$13.00

Sunday 15 May – Tidbinbilla, Johns Peak and beyond – M/R 

We ascend Johns Peak for the views and then do a circuit in the spectacular landscape beyond. This will involve walking down a stable cobble-scree slope and a short scramble up and along a narrow rocky ridge. Map: Tidbinbilla 1:25000 Leader: Chris L. Transport: ~$12

14- 15 May – An evening gourmet meal on The Castle – M/R

This a repeat of an enjoyable trip done last year. Climb The Castle Saturday with pack, food and water. Enjoy an arranged evening meal. Descend Sunday. Appropriate attire for ladies and bow-ties for gentlemen. RSVP no later than the previous Wednesday please. Map: CMW sketch map 2"=1 mile.Leaders: Jenny and Rob H. Transport: ~$25.

(13) 14-15 May [note change of date from last program] – Kosciuszko N.P. – M/R

Route: Smiggin Holes – Prussian Flat – Ramshead Range – Sawpit Creek – ridge above Bald Mountain Creek – Rennix Gap – Stonehenge – Plains of Heaven – Smiggin Holes. Stoves only. Maps: Berridale & Mount Kosciuszko 1:50,000 (1:25,000 tba) Leader: Sandy B. & Ian S..Transport: c.$30.00 plus park entry. Friday night departure from Canberra.

Saturday 21 May – Billy Billy Rocks-Fishing Gap Crossover – M/R

The cross-over is between the car parks at Smokers Gap and near Fishing Gap. We intend to have lunch at Billy Billy Rocks with the two groups together. Maps: Corin Dam, Tidbinbilla 1:25,000 Leaders: Jenny and Rob H. Transport: $8.50. 

Sunday, 22 May – Morton N.P. – M /M(R) Corang Lagoon and water race

We’ll start and finish at Wog Wog car park. Walk to Corang Lagoon through some impressive rolling country, with some fine rocky outcrops. Lunch at the Corang Lagoon. After we’ll explore the impressive water race. It was reportedly constructed by Chinese labourers with hand tools over a 100 years ago and runs parralell to the river for over 10 kms. We’ll spend a hour or so poking around, before returning homewards. It will be a long day and a little rough around the water race.Map: Corang 1:25000. Leader: John K. Transport: ~$22 . Limit of 8

(20), 21, 22 May – Durras weekend – M/E 

Leave Canberra Friday night and stay in comfortable, well equipped cabins at the Depot Beach Caravan Park. The Saturday walk is an ascent of Durras Mountain through the rainforest from the SW – not the usual Pebbly Beach-Pretty Beach route - and views to take your breath away as you descend facing the sea. Sunday will be the spectacular Little Forest Plateau, some distance north, with views west to the Budawangs, north to Pigeon House and beyond. After the Plateau, we return directly home. We will eat at the cabins on Saturday night. Each person will be responsible for his/her own meal. About 5hrs walking on Saturday, 4hrs on Sunday. Maps: Kioloa/Durras/Tianjara/Milton 1:25,000. Saturday 28 May – Nattai Gorge/Boxvale Tramway – M/M

Walk through light forest then traverse the spectacular and beautiful Nattai Gorge near Mittagong. Lunch at Boxvale Creek then back to the cars along the historic tramway alignment. All on track but a steep climb out of the gorge. About 4 1/4 hrs actual walking. Map: to be provided Leader: Stan Marks 6254 9568 (h), 6274 7350 (w), stan.marks@dotars.gov.au Transport: ~$30

Saturday evening 28 May – Songs around the campfire near Sheep Station Creek

This is in conjunction with Navigation Refresher #4. Options are: songs, Sat day trip up Sentry Box, the weekend round as a walker, the weekend round navigating. Leaders: Jenny and Rob H. See details of the Nav. Refresh. #4 for 28-29 May.

Sunday 29 May – Morton N.P. Flat Top Mountain – S-M/M

From Nerriga to a mesa in the NW Budawangs. Access is mainly on a fire trail but I want to do two short scenic detours to a sandstone rock wall and an outlook over Running Ck. There is a straighforward scramble through the cliffs to the good views from the summit. Map: Endrick 1:25,000. Leader: Jeff B. Transport: ~$22. Limit 12.

28- 29 May – Navigation Refresher #4, Naas, Sheepstation Creek, Sentry Box (side trip), Grassy Creek, Water-holes Hut and Pheasant Hill – M/M

A weekend trip consolidating map and compass skills mainly off-track. The last of four activites, any one or more of which people were welcome to join in as a refresher. Map: Yaouk 1:25,000 Leaders: Jenny and Rob H. Transport: ~$10.

Saturday, 4 June – Mt Majura – S/E 

Climb Mt Majura on track. Park at the gate to the horse paddocks on Antill St next to the last house in Hackett at 2pm, back at the car by 4.30. Sunday 5 June Namadgi NP – 11th Annual Smokers Trail crossover – M/E or L/E

This annual event has half the party walking through the Orroral Valley to the start of the Smokers Trail and the other half doing the trip in reverse.  The two halves meet in the middle by a creek for a sociable lunch.  Choose either to walk downhill with Michael (18kms + 400m descent) or uphill with Janet (18km + 400m climb). A car swap is required. Maps: Corin Dam, Rendezvous Creek 1:25000.  Joint Leaders: Janet E. and Michael G. Transport: about $8
