CANBERRA BUSHWALKING CLUB ACTIVITY PROGRAM

August 2005

The program for a month usually covers walks from the second Wednesday of the month to the second Wednesday of the following month. This program covers from the second Wednesday of August to the second Wednesday of September.

Saturday 13 August-  Budawangs – Monolith Valley Day Trip- L/M

 This is a classic walk into the heart of the Budawangs. All on tracks, huge cliffs, rainforests, a river to cross and a ridge to climb. There will be an early start and late return. Map: Corang 1:25000 Leader: Chris L Transport: $25

Saturday 13 August- Worn Boot Bash #4- L/M

Four mountains, 2 hills, 32 km- a circuit through some of the nature parks of urban Canberra starting and finishing at Kambah. Maps: Canberra, Tuggeranong 1:25,000 Leaders: Jenny & Rob H Transport: N/A

Saturday 20 August - Nursery Swamp and ridge - S-M/M

A walk partly on, partly off track to Nursery Swamp and the granite ridge overlooking Rendezvous Ck and Mts Herlt and Mavis. Some uphill sections. Map: Rendezvous Ck 1:25,000 or ACT 1:100,000. Leader: Jeff B Transport: ~$10.

Sunday 21 August- Booroomba Rocks- M/R

An east to west traverse of Booroomba Rocks from Bushfold Flats. Return to cars via the Alpine Track. Map Corin Dam & Williamsdale 1:25,000. Leader Roger E Transport $7 Limit 8

20- 21 August – Wombat Hill and Walking Dog weekend(M/E)

Two day walks from Meryla Pass, staying in hostel-type accommodation at Bundanoon on Saturday night. On Saturday, do the Wombat Hill walk and Rebecca Lookout walk (5 1/4 hrs walking, 3/4 on track) with views up the Bundanoon and Shoalhaven valleys, over Lake Yeronga and to Cambewarra Mountain and beyond.  Sat evening, dinner at a local restaurant. On Sunday, do the Walking Dog track (5 hrs all on good track, the remnants of the original 1896 Kangaroo Valley Road) which descends through rain forest to Yeronga Dam with spectacular views back to the cliffs.  Map:  Bundanoon 1:25,000  Leader:  Tom G Transport: ~$35, Bed and breakfast: $55

Saturday 27 August - Lake Burley Griffin (S/E)

Join me at the car park just outside the entrance to the Governor General’s residence at 3pm. We will walk along the lake shore to Telopea Park, thence to Manuka for coffee. Share of taxi fare should be under $5.

Sunday 28 August- The Pimple - Tidbinbilla M/M-R

Up the Camel's Back fire trail awhile and then a steep spur to Tidbinbilla Peak. An amble across the tops and then some rough stuff down to The Pimple, for lunch and stunning views.  We'll return via the more conventional route - Tidbinbilla Peak, John’s Peak, Camels Back and down the fire trail to the car park. Map: Tidbinbilla 1:25,000 Leader: John K. Transport: ~$6. Limit of 8

27-28 August– The Hoddles- M/R

After an early Saturday start we walk into the Budawangs via Sally’s Creek up onto Hoddle’s Castle Hill for camping. Sunday will be an exploratory trip rounding Mt Hoddle to the south, crossing Hoddle Creek and return via the fire trail Maps: Endrick 1:25 000. Leader: Gösta L Transport ~$28

Saturday 3 September - Great Horseshoe Bend- S/M

Strenuous 6KM walk commencing at Bullion Hill going down to Great Horseshoe Bend on the Shoalhaven River in the Bungonia Recreation Area. There are spectacular views along more than half of the track.   There is a 400 metre climb back out.  As the road there ( Matodoro Ridge Fire Trail) is only accessible by 4wheel drive vehicles (Foresters etc) numbers may be limited. Sunday, 4 September - Molonglo Gorge (S/E)

Surprise yourself at the attractiveness of this nearby gorge. Walk along trails beside the gorge to ‘The Tiles’, returning on track through the bush, perfect for a winter afternoon. Be at the trackhead (down Kowen Rd which comes off Sutton Road a short distance from the Piallago Rd/Yass Rd/Sutton Rd junction near Queanbeyan) at 3pm. About 2hrs actual walking. Sunday 4 September- Spencers Creek snowshoe walk. M/M, alpine

An exploration of some classic snow country in the Main Range without the need for skiing skills. Maps: 1:50k Kosciusko. Leader: Rupert B. Transport: $30 plus Park entrance for vehicle.

Saturday 10 September- In the shadow of Palerang (S/E-M) 

A walk in the Tallaganda National Park. From the Forbes Creek track head just east of Hoskinstown, we will follow the Bald Hill and Jinglemoney firetrails to Mulloon Creek, then along the Palerang firetrail before swinging west off track for about an hour before walking back on track to the cars. Mostly on track. The forest is different from that near Canberra. About 4 1/2hrs actual walking. Map: Bombay 1:25,000. Wednesday 14 September- Wednesday Walk
