CANBERRA BUSHWALKING CLUB ACTIVITY PROGRAM

July 2006

The program for a month usually covers walks from the second Wednesday of the month to the second Wednesday of the following month. This program covers from the second Wednesday of July to the second Wednesday of August.

Saturday 15 July – Coal Creek - Bundanoon – S/M

Coal Creek, from the old Erith coal mine and falls, is a spectacular short walk with an interesting mix of rainforests and sandstone cliffs. Map: Bundanoon 1:25000 Leader: Chris L Transport: ~$20

Sunday 16 July – Black Mt to Pinnacle – S/E

Meet at 8:30am at the end of Dungowan St, Hawker, the end point of the walk. We will then car shuffle to the electricity sub station at the end of Frith St, between the CSIRO and Black Mt to begin. Initially we will follow the track part way up the mountain on its eastern site, thence through the Aranda Bushland to the Pinnacle and the cars. About 3 hrs actual walking, mostly in various nature parks and reserves, finish before lunch. 15-16 July – Beginners Overnight Camp - Nursery Swamp – S/M

Orroral Valley - Nursery Swamp. A short easy walk on a track in Namadgi National Park for those who want to try overnight camping. Leaving Canberra at midday on Saturday and return at midday on Sunday. Map: Rendezvous Creek 1:25000 Leader: Rene D Transport: ~$10

Wednesday 19 July – Monthly Meeting – 8:00pm at St Johns Church Hall, Reid

The Kokoda Track: A Pilgrimage.

Saturday 22 July – Grassy Creek/Old Boboyan Road – M/E-M

Wander through the grasslands and forests of the southern ACT. See some of the old homesteads in the area. 4 hrs actual walking. Area has not been burnt. Map: Yaouk 1:25000 Leader: Tom G Transport: ~$20

Sunday 23 July – North end Mt Clear Range – S/M

This short walk is a return trip from the Angle Crossing Road to a high point on the northern end of the Mt Clear Range. Map: ACT 1:100000 Leader: Rob H Transport: ~$6

Saturday 29 July – O’Connor Ridge to Dairy Farmers Hill – M/E

Meet at 9:30am in the car park opposite 160 Dryandra St, O’Connor. We will follow the O’Connor and Bruce Ridges, then via Black Mt reserve and the lake shore to Dairy Farmers Hill for lunch. The return will be via the Himalayan Cedars, the cork plantation and the Aranda Bushland. Saturday 29 July – Namadgi NP - Billy Billy Rocks – M/R

Another bush-bashing and rock-hopping extravaganza. A walk from Smokers Gap car park up some steep spurs to some spectacular rock formations on the ridge overlooking Tidbinbilla. The Billy Billy rocks are the most majestic of all. We’ll attempt to reach the summit but the route can be tricky. Will return to the cars via Billy Billy Creek which will require a car shuffle. There may be snow so bring a hot pot of soup or tea. Map: Corin Dam 1:25000 Leader: John K Transport: ~$10 Limit: 8

Sunday 30 July – Pierces Trig & Camel Hump – M/E-M

A relatively easy walk in the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. All on track except the short climb up to the top of the Camels Hump. Map: Tidbinbilla 1:25000 Leader: Roger E Transport: ~$7

Saturday 5 August – Brindabella NP – S-M/R

Let us have another look at how the bush in Brindabella NP has recovered after the bushfires - and flowering wattles might be pleasing our eyes. Beyond Dingo Dell Flats we follow the Baldy Range fire trail, descend to Mountain Creek for lunch and, depending on conditions, either climb Grevillea Ridge or follow Mountain Creek to Top Crossing; back along Doctors Flat Road. Sunday 6 August – Castle Hill ramble – S/M

This walk is an after-lunch ramble with afternoon tea near the trig point. The view is good: 360 degree panorama. Map: ACT 1:100000 Leader: Rob H Transport: ~$5

5-6 August – Kiandra - Four Mile Hut snow camp – E/M

Winter turns the usually drab hills south of Kiandra into sweeps of sparkling white, broken by silhouettes of rugged burnt snow gums. We’ll head for 4 Mile Hut on snowshoes, set up camp, and explore towards the old Nine Mile diggings. If the snow cover is inadequate we’ll head instead for the Main Range. (4)5-6 August – Barren Grounds Reserve Weekend – L/E and S/E

Leave Canberra Friday evening. On Saturday we will do a 20km walk through heath country to the edge of the escarpment and enjoy several spectacular views of the coast and nearby ranges. Sunday will be a shorter walk (10km) to Macquarie Pass National Park, before returning home on the Sunday afternoon. The Reserve is famous for its bird life and wildflowers. Have booked 3 cabins at The Ben Ricketts Environmental Preserve (http://www.benricketts.org.au/) for 2 nights.
