River Crossing Training

Sat 27 February 2021 – afternoon

This course will help you decide whether a deep or strongly flowing river is safe to cross and teach you simple techniques that will make your crossing much safer. A bit of theory, and a lot of practice in the clear-flowing waters of the Cotter River – also a great way to spend a hot February afternoon. A few hours on this course could help save your life one day. Open to CBC Members. See Current Activities for details and bookings

Walk to ‘Save Kosci’

Sat 3 November – mid-December 2018

CBC is an official supporter of the Save Kosci protest walk. Walkers will start from Sydney on Saturday 3rd November and arrive at the top of Kosciuszko 35+ days later. The walk aims to seek repeal of the Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Act and seek a significant reduction in the number of wild horses and other feral animals in Kosciuszko National Park.

The walking route will follow a mixture of major and minor roads, and tracks through parks and reserves, via Picton, Mittagong, Bungonia, Queanbeyan, Cooma and Jindabyne. A number of CBC members, including Terence Uren and Doug Wright, are leading CBC trips which will join parts of the walk. See Current Activities for details.

ACT Percys – from February 2016

Like views from high hills? This ongoing incentive program encourages you to visit the ACT peaks over 1000 metres, which include many of the best vantage points in the ACT. Some are not as easy as you might think, as a ‘bag’ requires you to touch the highest point of the feature.

There are 68 peaks on the ACT list and 111 possible points. The 68 peaks are referred to as ˜Percys” after local pioneering surveyor Percy Sheaffe in the same way that there are ˜Abels” in Tasmania and ˜Munros” in the UK. Peaks are divided into eight districts.

In all cases, the highest point must be touched, regardless of the spot height on the map.  Repeat ascents do not count.

It’s an honour system: keep your own tally.
