WordPress does not normally support download links to .gpx and .kml files. However, Web Manager Andrew Meers added code in May 2020 to support these files. For examples of such links, see any of the Self-guided walks pages.

To add a download link

  • Media > Add New > select the gpx or kml file. You will see the file in the Media list, as Unattached.
  • Create the page that will have the download link. Publish it.
  • Media > find the file > Hit ‘attach’ > Attach it to the page you have just published
  • Still within the Media Library,  hit ‘Edit’ for the gpx or kml file. Copy its URL.
  • Pages > find the page > Edit
  • Select the text that will be the link e.g. select ‘map of the route as a kml file’ > Ctrl-K (opens a link dialogue box) > Ctrl-V (To paste in the URL that you copied) > Hit the arrow icon to apply the link
  • Save and Exit
  • Update

There seems to be an intermittent problem where adding a download link to a page makes the surrounding text disappear. To fix, edit the page, select the ‘disappeared’ text and make its text colour black.
