Club policy

The Club has public liability insurance, provided through Bushwalking NSW Inc.

This provides the Club with public liability cover. Committee members, activity leaders and all financial Club members are covered for public liability. Visiting participants are covered up to a reasonable number of activities – usually three – after which they are expected to become financial members (and thus contribute to the insurance costs).

CBC does not provide personal accident insurance; this policy was ratified at the March 2009 General Meeting.

Costs of rescue and treatment

The cost of rescue or extraction from a Club event, and subsequent treatment of and recovery from any injury, may well be substantial. As each member’s circumstances are different, CBC can make no recommendations, but provides the following information:

  • In life-threatening circumstances, rescue services in Australia are provided by government agencies at no cost. In the Club’s experience, walkers with fractures have been rescued at no cost.
  • The cost for extraction in frivolous or non-life-threatening circumstances may be charged to you.
  • Any cost of extraction, whether by helicopter or ambulance, may be covered if you have private health insurance. Check with your insurer.
  • Costs that may be covered by your private health insurance include: medical and hospital costs, loss of income during recovery from injury, and loss or damage of equipment. Check with your insurer.

Overseas trips

The Club’s public liability insurance applies only to Club activities in Australia and New Zealand. For Club activities overseas, all participants must take out public liability and medical insurance. Most travel insurance policies provide this cover.
